Dr. Deutsch, founder of our Atlanta plastic surgery practice, has offered advice about mommy makeovers on the community review site Real Self. Most recently, he has offered advice about cost, recovery time, and how best to prepare for mommy makeovers.
Dr. Deutsch has offered the following advice for women considering undergoing a mommy makeover:
Mommy Makeover Preparation: “Make sure you are eating healthy, nutritious meals and have a good workout routine. Do the heavy cardio/weights now, as you will have to wait several weeks after surgery before resuming. Since you will be unable to pick up your young children for a few weeks, I advise my patients to have childcare set up in advance. Furthermore, for the first few days, you may also need help for yourself at home. To help speed your recovery, take it easy those first few weeks.”
Mommy Makeover Recovery Time: “Mommy makeover recovery can take up to 6 weeks. I recommend that my patients start light walking in the neighborhood a few days after surgery, and they can pick up their babies a few weeks after surgery. With tummy tuck patients I recommend no heavy lifting for the first 5-6 weeks. [If] you have a desk job, I would say that 10 days is an adequate amount of time off from work as long as you keep in mind the lifting restriction. Take it easy when starting back to work. Listen to your body.
Mommy Makeover Price: “The pricing for the mommy makeover can vary depending on the breast procedure you are having performed….There is a price range for the mommy makeover from $7,000-$15,000 depending on the procedures your surgeon suggests for you.”

According to Dr. Deutsch, breast augmentation patients are advised to wait at least three weeks before exercising after the surgery to allow the body time to heal and control the amount of swelling in the breast area. Furthermore, patients are advised to start out with low impact exercise routines (stationary bike or elliptical machine) and wait 4-6 weeks before running or beginning high impact exercise.

According to Dr. Deutsch, patients that are in good overall health and are physically fit could return to work during their second post-operative week following a lower body lift procedure, depending on the job description (i.e. desk job). However, it is recommended that patients not lift more than ten pounds for a few weeks following the surgery. Furthermore, another requirement for returning to work is that patients are no longer taking narcotic pain relievers.

As part of his continued participation in question and answer sessions on Real Self, Dr. Deutsch has answered a series of questions regarding breast implant size, breast implant type, and breast implant placement on the community review site. He received many questions regarding making decisions about how best to approach the procedure to achieve the most natural look. In general, he said that “placing the implant under the muscle is helpful for preventing the edge of the implant from being seen,” and that “the silicone gel implant is considered more natural in feel and appearance,” but that ultimately, decisions about breast implant size, type, and placement are choices that each patient must make with her doctor. In continuation of his involvement with the site, Dr. Deutsch has answered more questions about breast implants on realself.com. In addition to his other answers about placement, size and type of implants, he has now given information about how long breast implants last, breast implants and pregnancy, and breast implant recovery time. On the site, Dr. Deutsch says that breast implants generally last about 15 years, and that “breast implants have greatly improved over the past several years and most women will have many years before there is a need to exchange implants.” He also said that some women will be able to return to work within a few days of getting the procedure, but that they should not do any heavy lifting for at least four weeks. For more in depth information about these topics, see Dr. Deutsch’s profile on Real Self.

This month, in honor of moms we are offering specials for Mother’s Day! A mommy makeover can be a wonderful gift for a new mom that is having trouble getting back in shape after giving birth. Mommy makeovers combine a tummy tuck and a breast procedure (typically breast implants or breast lift), which are the two areas most affected by pregnancy and childbirth. Giving the gift of a mommy makeover is giving the gift of allowing a new mom to get back to her old self. For more information, call Perimeter Plastic Surgery at (770) 461-4824.
