Puffy lower eyelids and hooding of the upper lid may be inherited or due to aging.  Excessive hooding of the upper eyelid may affect eyesight.  A visual field exam is required by your eye doctor for submission to insurance for coverage.  The cosmetic blepharoplasty is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures in the United States.

In an upper eyelid blepharoplasty, an ellipse of excess skin and adipose are removed from an incision made at a natural lid crease for camouflage.

There are two procedures in performing a lower blepharoplasty.  If only excess fat is a problem, the surgical approach is made through an incision inside the lower eyelid.  Therefore, surgical scars are completely hidden.  If excess skin also needs to be excised, the incision is made just below the eyelashes.  This area generally heals very well.

Recovery and potential complications are similar to that of the facelift. Bruising and swelling usually resolve in approximately 2 weeks. Patients may resume application of makeup after 2 weeks.
